Anyone can plan a project, anyone can do a fit/gap analysis, anyone can design a gap solution. Not just anyone can effectively configure, not just anyone can develop working solutions, not just anyone can make systems run faster. Something like 20% of implantation or development skills growth comes from testing before go-live. We learn how to get the results need for the test cases. Something like 70% skills growth comes from Support, Support, and more Support – we learn if the system that was implemented is supportable, adaptable, expandable, reliable, fast enough, and meets all the requirements. So remember that the 10% skills spent guessing (planning and fit/gap) and dreaming (designing) will only improve dramatically with support experience. Recruit resources that have learned hard lessons supporting what they designed or built especially if they put in the effort to redesign or refactor the work done.
The PSPA world is made up of a relatively small pool of consulting resources. Find the ones that have been invited to provide continuing support on complex projects. Those are the people that are worth their weight in gold. The others that start, but don’t stay on to finish, lots of projects simply haven’t had the opportunity to learn from experience. Those that worked on failed projects to the end, most certainly have learned a great deal.
